Direction and Storytelling
Parents send their children to college with the hope that they will focus on their studies, secure good jobs, and settle down peacefully. They expect them to stay away from trouble. However, Derby explores the exact opposite reality, focusing on the internal wars that brew among students arriving from various backgrounds.
Director Sajil Mampad attempts to showcase the complex relationship between seniors and juniors, the divisive nature of ragging, and the management’s inability to curb campus politics. The narrative tries to highlight how hot-headed impulsiveness can jeopardize a student’s future, while attempting to weave in emotional subplots from the perspectives of their families.
While the director succeeds to an extent in capturing a realistic college atmosphere and student behavior, the script stumbles in its execution. Out of love, friendship, comedy, and family emotions, only the friendship aspect receives decent focus. The remaining emotional threads fail to leave an impact, making the viewing experience underwhelming.

The young actors playing the students deliver decent performances and fit their roles well. However, the character writing lacks depth, particularly regarding emotional arcs, which prevents the audience from truly connecting with their journeys.
Technical Aspects: Music, Cinematography, and Visuals
On the technical front, Derby delivers strictly average output. The cinematography, background score by Gopi Sundar, and editing serve the purpose but do not offer anything extraordinary or fresh to elevate the flat screenplay.
Furthermore, the script lacks a steady flow, often meandering into unnecessary subplots and exaggerated sequences. For instance, a scene where a student arrives in a helicopter simply because vehicles are banned on campus feels incredibly over-the-top. Similarly, introducing a new faction led by Hakim, just as Amal’s gang is already terrorizing the campus, feels redundant and forced.
Derby Movie Review: Overall Verdict
College dramas rarely miss out on romance and youthful entertainment, elements that traditionally draw the target audience to the screens. However, Derby completely bypasses these aspects, focusing almost entirely on student politics, arguments, and physical brawls. The lack of a strong emotional anchor behind these conflicts serves as a major drawback.
Even though the content was tailored explicitly for younger audiences, the weak execution and predictable narrative prevent Derby from being truly engaging. It remains an ordinary campus drama that misses the mark.
